Tonight's Pour — Still Austin 'The Artist' Straight Rye
Came across Food & Wine’s roundup of the best whiskeys for a Manhattan this afternoon, and there in the mix — alongside the Rittenhouses and Michter’s of the world — was Still Austin. Noah Parman called it “an outstanding independent brand that prioritizes locality, sustainability, and ultimately a tasty product while remaining budget-friendly.”
That tracked. So tonight the Hound came back to The Artist.
100 proof. Texas grain, milled on site. Their own sub-zero water filtration, their own solera-style finishing program. Grain-to-glass without the trophy-bottle markup — somewhere around forty bucks for a straight rye that punches with bottles costing twice as much.
Love the spice. Love the price. Love the distillery.
If you want to build Parman’s Manhattan:
- 2 oz Still Austin Straight Rye
- 1 oz Cocchi Vermouth di Torino (or vermouth of choice — this is important!)
- 2 dashes orange bitters
The rye’s pepper cuts right through the Cocchi’s richness. Classic 212 build — 2 oz whiskey, 1 oz vermouth, 2 dashes bitters — easy to remember, hard to mess up.
Independent. Honest. Worth rooting for.
